Lady. Gaga. The one called the new Madonna released a brand new single, “Bad Romance” for her Fame Monster album. The concept for the new CD is dark and introspective. The life of glamour, fame, “Paparazzi,” or money is not addressed. “Bad Romance” confronts the idea of love at its worst and one’s quest for revenge.
Lyrically, the song puts out a satirical tone stating, “I want your ugly, I want your disease.” The singer wants the relationship to fail at the lover’s expense to justify revenge. The sob-like vocalizing cuts through the synth-pop to underscore a bruised heart.
Although the song is catchy and playing heavily on the airwaves, Gaga’s music video has made a different impression: Opening with a few suspenseful bars of a harpsichord to reveal space-age coffins fit for Edward Cullen. “Where the Wild Things Are” inspired costumes compete with lingerie, latex pieces, metal orbits and golden armadillo-like dress. In short, Lady Gaga spares no creativity on the wardrobe.
According to Gaga, the video depicts her being kidnapped by the Russian mafia, forced to drink vodka and sold to the highest bidder. The suitor’s gold-plated jaw must have dropped when Gaga approached him. A bearskin rug is attached to her, head dragging on the floor. Unfortunately, the lover would not be able enjoy it as the video ends quite explosively.
The nightmarish quality of the lyrics and visuals may come as a surprise to those used to her pop-embalmed “The Fame.” However, the greatest shock is just how good “Bad Romance” truly is. Exciting, stimulating, horrifying, catchy, and monstrous, exactly what “The Fame Monster” should be.
