There is a new face in the Rosemont College Community! Dr. David Mislan is the newest addition to the Rosemont family. Prior to joining the Political Science department here, Professor Mislan taught at Rutgers University and Seton Hill College.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in History from Rutgers; his Masters in Government from Johns Hopkins University. His PhD in Political Science came from Rutgers. Professor Mislan is teaching two courses in international politics: International Relations and American Foreign policy. In addition, he is teaching Introduction to Political Science. His areas of expertise are international relations, war and peace, national security, and American foreign policy. He actively researches and writes about international politics. Also, he is interested in learning more about South Eastern Europe.
Rosemont compared to Rutgers, Professor Mislan says “the students come to class more often,” and he mentions, of course, the size of the campus is an adjustment. At Rosemont he does not have to take a shuttle bus from one half of the campus to the other.
Professor Mislan visited many places around the world and incorporates insights from the various cultures into his teachings. He visited Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia, Moldova, and Croatia. During the summer, he taught summer school in Croatia for students interested starting NGOs. In addition, he works with the government in Croatia to bring reconciliation between the Croats and Serbs.
When Professor Mislan has free time on his hands, he plays racquetball; he even keeps a small black racquetball in his desk drawer. He is an avid angler. At the moment, he and his wife are writing a children’s book. Also, he enjoys learning about beer, and sometimes visits beer breweries. He admits that he loves to cook and his two favorite meals are paella and “a mean chili.” “I need to enter a competition,” he says chuckling. In addition, he is a huge baseball fan. Sorry Phillies fans, for Professor Mislan is a devoted NY Yankees’ fan. “I converted my wife from being a Phillies fan into a NY Yankees’ fan. I love the NY Yankees. I was raised by a family of NY Yankees.” He says jokingly, “I don’t think my family would have fed me dinner if I wasn’t a NY Yankees’ fan.” When he is not watching his favorite baseball team, he spends time with his dog, a chocolate lab, named Nari.
You can find Professor Mislan in office 223, or you are sure to identify him by a tiny white coffee mug that is usually in one of his hands. Students in his American Foreign policy course poke fun at his tiny white coffee mug that he carries around containing his espresso.
