Released on July 24th, 2009, “Orphan” has become arguably the best thriller of the year. The movie begins by telling the story of The Coleman family, in which parents, Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Saarsgard) are grieving the devastating loss of their unborn baby. Though the loss is taking a great toll on them individually, it's taking an even greater toll on their marriage. Kate, who is suffering with traumatic nightmares from the event, suggests that they adopt a child. The two would've never guessed that this is where their lives would be completely changed.
After visiting an orphanage, the couple find themselves almost
immediately drawn to a nine year old Russian girl named, Esther (Isabelle
Fuhrman). The couple soon brings her
home and she joins the Colemans' other two young children, Daniel (Jeremy
Bennett) and partially deaf Max (Aryana Engineer). It becomes frighteningly obvious however,
that there is something very different about Esther. As strange events continue to occur, Kate
becomes more and more concerned about her family's well-being and is determined
to prove that there is more to the little girl than her sweet facade.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax), the elements of
the movie sometimes resemble that of a horror film, with a thrilling backdrop.
The situations of the film are executed perfectly and it leaves you shocked
until the very end with all the twists and turns of the plot. This one is
definitely worth the 122 minutes of viewership.
