This year the basketball team had a huge lineup of games, with eight in the fall semester and 17 this semester. This is a tall order for any team, but especially a young team of nine.
Head Coach Andy McGovern said that they are working hard offensively and defensively, but hoping to improve on the shooting. Even though there have been many skillful schools added to this conference, Rosemont has still held out good defense.
The last game they played was against Cabrini College on the 29th. Cabrini is currently undefeated in the conference; however, Rosemont was able to take the lead at times and tied with them 27-27 in the first half. The second half started out good with Rosemont taking the lead; however, in the last 18 minutes Cabrini dominated the court, ending the game with a loss for the Ramblers and a score of 43-82.
Since the team is so strong defensively, they try to work on using that to their advantage. During their practices, they mainly work on their shooting so they can pull up their shooting percentage in games. As a team they encourage and support one another because when it comes down to a game, they have to be confident in their own ability; as long as they try their best, they can be proud of how they played. The team bonding continues in the locker room and in their van rides to and fro games as they converse and prepare. They always try to accentuate the positive, even after a loss, for with 25 games there is always another one to look forward to in order to learn from the mistakes of the last game and improve upon them. Coach McGovern said, “I am satisfied by their effort, as long as they stay consistent because winning starts with defense, but there are still some things they need to work on.”
I spoke with the three captains, Christa Bednarek, Karen Boyle, and Alesha Butler, about the dynamic of the team. Christa said, “We are struggling to find a common level, for everyone to be on the same page at the same time during the games.”
Alesha stated, “We try to take one game at a time and we always try to put out our best.”
Alexis Feyou De Happy, the manager of the team, said, “It is always hard when you lose half a team, but they are making it work and now they have gained one more player and have a positive outlook for the rest of the season.”
