In
a landmark 60-39 vote on Christmas Eve 2009 by the United States
Senate, a bill was passed to guarantee health insurance access to
millions of Americans and to change the system completely. What a
fitting end to the year and Barack Obama’s first year as President of the United States.

Letter from the Editors:
Rosemont College encourages its students to be opinionated individuals who are not afraid to express their beliefs and follow through with their principles. One can even find these ideals within Rosemont’s mission statement: “Rosemont College seeks to develop in all members of the community open and critical minds.”
Our respected professors wisely inform us that we should not sit idly
by and observe injustices happening around us. If we, as conscientious citizens, should feel strongly about a particular issue, then we should not let any obstacle hinder our convictions.

School
tuition is a huge factor in not only determining which school we will
attend as college students but, also what career we will pursue, as well as how far we will go in our education. For that reason, it's easy to understand why an outraged group of University of California- Davis campus students decided to protest at their schools' administration office on November 19th, 2009, after it was announced that their school tuition would be increasing 32% for the Fall 2010 semester.

Typically,
members of the glee club are not exactly positioned at the top of the
high school social totem pole. Luckily for the cast members of Fox's
new series Glee however,
there's no way you can watch an episode without cheering for the
success of the glee clubs' eclectically combined misfits. The first
season of the series has focused on the academic, social and personal
challenges that the club members and their instructor, Mr. Shuester
(Matthew Morrison) have all endured in pursuit of greatness for the
“sectionals” competition.

There is a long held tradition at Rosemont; right before the fall semester comes to a close, there is a celebration of Christmas. On the last Sunday of the semester there is an Advent mass held in the chapel. It is then followed by a candlelight walk of caroling around campus. Everyone
then joins together on the terrace in front of Main for our college’s
oldest tradition, the Penny Toss. The President of the college, the
Dean of Students, and the SGA President throw pennies from the balcony
to the students catching them below. Everyone then proceeds inside of Main for desserts and hot beverages.

Lady. Gaga. The one called the new Madonna released a brand new single, “Bad Romance” for her Fame Monster album. The concept for the new CD is dark and introspective. The life of glamour, fame, “Paparazzi,” or money is not addressed. “Bad Romance” confronts the idea of love at its worst and one’s quest for revenge.

A new artistic sensation is rampant throughout France: guerilla “hijabization.” An anonymous artist known solely as Princess Hijab, spray paints hijabs and chadors on public images of women and men in ads in Paris. Since 2006, her actions have spurred not only a fantastic new artistic craze, but also a controversy that runs deep in France today. In recent years, President Nicholas Sarkozy denounced hijabs as oppressive to women and his predecessor, President Jacques Chirac, passed legislation to ban hijabs in schools.

Hunger and Homelessness Pledge: “We pledge to go forward with a renewed mindfulness that we are blessed to have a room to go back to, that we are fortunate to have a bed to lie in, that there are those who are our brothers and sisters who are dignified persons, children of God, who deserve our respect, our love, and our courage in fighting for an end to their injustice.”

What
a difference a year makes. Much to the dismay of the Democrats
currently occupying the White House, Congress and state houses across
the country, a particularly blue state and a purple state returned to
Republican control this past Election Day. The double-header sweep of two very important governors’ races this year gave Republicans renewed hope for
the growing unpopularity of the Democratic majority. The honeymoon
period brought about by President Obama’s historic victory seems to be
ending in less than a year’s time.
